Why do Haitians say, "I'm going up a calvary"

Calvary  (the hill where Jesus was crucified) → kalvè

M'ap monte yon kalvè.
I'm going up a calvary.
I'm going through a painful ordeal.

Pandan dezan maryaj sa mwen t'ap monte yon kalvè.
During those two years of marriage I went through hell.
