"unless" Google Translate translates this as "sof si" or "amwens" or "toutotan" but I don't think I've ever heard anyone say this. You've said that "si w pa" is the best way, which I understand, but can you help me understand the Google Translate version

Unless
sof si (literally 'save that', 'except if'. It's from the French 'sauf si')
sèl si (literally 'only if')
a mwens or amwenske (literally 'lest', 'except for')
toutotan (as long as)

Some examples with these expressions.

You will not pass the test unless you study.
Ou p'ap pase tès la sof si ou etidye.
Ou pa'p pase tès la sèl si ou etidye.
Ou p'ap pase tès la amwenske ou etidye.

As far as 'toutotan' is concerned, we tend to use it in negative sentences when we mean 'unless'

Unless you apologize, I won't come back to you.
Toutotan ou pa mande eskiz, mwen pap tounen avè w.

Unless you're done, we can't leave.
Toutotan ou pa fini, nou pa ka pati.

"Unless you bless me, I won't let you go."
"Toutotan ou pa beni w, mwen p'ap lage w."

As long as you still here, I'll help you.
Toutotan ou la toujou, m'ap ede w

In lesson 15 one of the answers to the practice problems is "Li di m la verite". In what instances whould the definite article precede the noun like this?

Actually the word is laverite or verite truth.

It is not a Haitian Creole article that precedes it in this sentence. It is a French def. article which appear in many Haitian Creole words. See this link: http://sweetcoconuts.blogspot.com/2012/03/sometimes-it-looks-like-definite.html

To add a Haitian Creole article to this word, you would say: laverite a or verite a (the truth)

Li di laverite.
Li di verite.
Li di la verite a.
Li di verite a.
all the above translates : He/she tells the truth.

Listen to the beautiful Creole Lyrics of this song :)

Tout lanmou sa  by Genesis for Him

Lyrics:
Dèfwa mwen leve lè maten
Mwen di m’a gen tan priye
E lè mwen retounen leswa
Mwen di m twò fatige
Men sa mwen pa wè, etan m’ap mache
Se zanj ou, ou voye
Pou gide pa mwen, pou m pa tonbe
Ala m pa merite.

Tout lanmou  sa a
Ou gen pou mwen
Mwen pap janm ka konprann
Pouki ou renmen m.

Dèfwa ou chita  nan yon kwen katye
Ou mande m degouden
Mwen pase  m gade, epi m’ale
Avèk pòch mwen byen plen
Men sa mwen bliye

What do you see?
Kisa ou wè?
Kisa ou wè la?
Sa ou wè?

What are you looking at?
Kisa w'ap gade?
Kisa w'ap gade la?
Sa w'ap gade?

'pa vle wè' is expression for 'to hate'?

yes.

Pa ka sipòte → can't stand, can't tolerate

Mwen pa vle wè li.
I hate him.

M pa ka wè lè w fè sa.
I hate when you do that.

Mwen pa ka wè li.
I can't stand her.
I can't tolerate her.

Mwen pa ka wè chen k'ap jape.
I can't stand barking dogs.
I can't tolerate barking dogs.
