Saw genyen figi w kagou konsa?
What’s wrong your face is so down and out?
Why do you look so down?

M santi lavi a mete pye sou kou m.
I feel life has put a foot on my neck.  Everything I do to free myself has been unsuccessful.
I feel that life has a foot on my neck.  I’ve tried unsuccessfully to free myself.

M pa janm tande w pale konsa avan.  Sa’w genyen?
I’ve never heard you talk like that before.  What’s wrong?

Men kounye a m pral oblije fèmen biznis mwen. M pa konn sa m va fè kounye a.  M pa janm reyisi nan anyen m fè. Petèt m pa t fèt pou m gen siksè nan lavi a ditou.
I’ve worked so hard for my business to flourish and it’s never happened.  So now I’ll have to close my business.  I don’t know what I’ll do now. I never succeed in anything I do.  I always fail at everything I do.  Maybe I was not meant to be successful in life at all.

Sa  w’ap di la?  Sanble ou deside fè bèk atè nèt?
What are you saying?  It’s seemed that you have totally surrendered.

Men wi, m fin dekouraje  nèt.
Of course, I’m totally disappointed.

Pa dekouraje w zanmi m. Premye so pa so ditou.  Ou ka kilbite plizyè fwa nan lavi a, men lè w tonbe se pa pou w rete atè a.  Se pou w leve pou kontinye lite.
Don’t be discouraged my friend.  The first "fail" is no failure at all.  You may stumble many times in life but when you fall you shouldn’t stay down.  You must get up to continue to fight.

I have given all my energy and all that I had.  I don’t have strength left to start over.

Si tout moun t’ap fè tankou w.  Si yo te bay legen nan premye echèk yo fè anpil envasyon sou latè a pa t’ap egziste.
If everyone was doing the same as you, if they gave up at their first failures many inventions on earth wouldn’t have existed.

Men mezanmi si m’ap pede tonbe leve konsa, moun va di se madichon ki nan kò m kifè m pa ka reyisi nan anyen.
But If I keep going up and down like this people would say that it’s a curse that makes me unsuccessful.

Forget what everyone thinks or says.  You’re not living for them. After God you are your own master.  Look my dear be courageous you hear!  The first fall is no fall.

To tell you the truth this is neither my first nor my second fall.  I believe I’m on my fourth or even my fifth.

Enben se pa gwo zafè.  Tank ou pran so se tank ou va jwenn divès fason pou pare so a.
Well that’s no big deal.  The more you fall, the more you’ll find diverse ways to break the fall.

A! petèt yon jou m’a envante kouman moun pare so.   Mèsi pou ankourajman ou.  Mwen te byen bezwen sa.
Ah! Maybe one day I’ll invent ways for people to break a fall.  Thanks for your encouragement. I really needed this.

Pa gen pwoblèm.  Kontinye eseye e kenbe la.
No problem.  Keep trying and hang in there.

Mezanmi, Mariette toujou kè pòpòz.  Li pa janm gen kè sote.
Mariette is always calm.  She's never anxious.

Ou menm nenpòt ti bagay kontrarye w. Dis min toujou mare nan fwon w.  Lè w gen pwoblèm, men longè bouch ou.
As for you, anything little thing upsets you.  You always have a frown on your face.  When you have problems, your lips are that long (pouting).

Se lavi a k'ap malmennen m pitit.  Kanta pou Mariette, m pa konnen kouman fè li pa janm kite anyen twouble l.  M'ap mande m kijan l fè l.
Life isn't good to me child.  As for Mariette, I don't know how come she never lets anything trouble her.  I wonder how she does it.

Enben petèt li pa gen okenn tèt chaje nan lavi l.
Well maybe she doesn't have any problems in her life.

Okontrè, dam sa a plen pwoblèm.  Li pa viv lasante. Bòs li toujou ap ba l presyon nan travay li.  E mari l ap fè l pase nan je zegwi.
To the contrary, this woman has a lot of problems.  She's not in good health. Her boss is always giving her pressure at work.  And her husband does not treat her that well.

Maybe she's a millionaire, she doesn't have money problem

Enpitou bil li men wotè.
That's not it.  Millionaires don't do the type of job she's doing.  And her bills are that high.

Petèt se medikaman li pran pou l kalme l.
Maybe she takes medication to stay calm.

Non. Si l t'ap pran medikaman li ta soule tout tan.  Men li toujou ap souri.  Kèlkeswa sa k pase li li toujou rete trankil.  Li pa janm pèdi sanfwa l.   Kè l pa janm kase. Kè l toujou pozeSa k fè sa?
No.  If she was taking medication she'd be drowsy all the time. But she's always smiling.  Whatever happens to her, she is always temperate.  She never loses her cool.  She's never anxious. She's always poised.  Why is that?

Enben, sanble li jwenn sekrè lavi a.
Well it seems that she has found the secret to life.

Sekrè lavi a? Kounye a ou vle di m ou konn sekrè linivè antye?
The secret to life?  Now you mean to tell me that you know the secret of the entire universe?

M pa ka di w m konnen l men m gen yon lide.
I can't tell you that I know it but I have an idea.

Ki sa l ye?  Di m li tanpri pou m ka gen lajwa tou.
What is it? Tell it to me please so that I may also have joy.

M panse sekrè lavi a nan pwovèb sa a.  Pa chaje tèt ou, rete kè pòpòz.  Se sekrè a.
There's a Haitian proverb that says, "Being serene is the body's remedy". I think the secret to life is in this proverb. Don't trouble yourself, remain calm.  That's the secret.

Enben konpliman Monchè.  Pou valè moun k'ap chache sekrè lavi a enpi se ou k jwenn ni.  Se pou w vann sekrè sa a bay tout moun konsa nou va rich e mwen finalman va gen kè kontan tankou Mariette.
Well congratulations my dear.  So many people are looking for the secret to life and it is you that finds it.  You must sell it to everyone so that we will be rich and I'll finally be as happy as Mariette.

Are you sure Mariette isn't your spirit (alter ego)?

W'ap pase m nan betiz.  M p'ap okipe w.  M'ap rete kè pòpòz.
You're making fun of me.  I won't pay attention to you.  I will stay calm.

Sa se istwa Toto ak Janèt.
This is the story of Toto and Janet.

Toto and Janet were husband and wife.

These two people were like two peas in a pod.  They were totally in love.

Men sa’k vin pase.
Here's what happened.  Toto used to work around the clock.  He never had time.  He was never there.  Janet, herself, was tired of staying home alone in the house.  Everyday it was like that.  So, you know, when the cat's away the mice come to play.

Wi machè! Misye te vin sispèk madanm ni ka ap ba li zokloJanèt toujou demanti mari l. Konsa yon jou Toto ba l yon kou sipriz.  Li rantre lakay sanzatann.
Yes! He suspected that his wife may have been cheating on him.  Janet always denied it.  So one day Toto surprised her.  He came home unexpectedly.

Lè Toto rantre nan kay la, sa l wè l pa ka pale.  L’al pantan sou yon move sipriz. Yon lòt nèg….
When Toto got into the house, he was speechless.  He came upon a bad surprise.  Another man...

Li fin deraye. Li rale yon kouto.
Just like you heard, Janet was cornered.  All secret was out.  Toto got really mad.  He lost it completely.  He pulled out a knife.

Li ranmase rad li, o o! toutouni an,  li di “pye sa m te manje m pa’t ba w!”. Li chape poul li.
The other man saw the knife, it was not a game anymore.  He picked up his clothes, all naked, he asked his feet to take him as far away as possible.  He split.

Toto menase Janèt ak kouto a. Janèt menm ranmase tout zafè li.  Li kite kay la ak kanè bank mari li blanch.  Li kite misye sou po bouda l.
Toto threatened Janet with the knife.  Janet picked up her belongings and emptied out the house and her husband's bank account.  She left him penniless.

Tèt chaje! Toto pèdi ni sak ni krab. Li pèdi lanmou. Li pèdi madanm. Li pèdi  lajan li. Li pèdi diyite l. Ou konn tande yo di gason pa kriye.
It's a dilemma indeed!  Toto lost everything.  He lost his love.  He lost his wife.  He lost his money.  He lost his dignity.  You hear they say that men don't cry.  Well, seeing is believing, he cried like baby.

Depi lè sa a Toto pran lavi a ak degou.  Li te toujou kenbe espwa ke yon jou Janèt va tounen vin jwenn ni.
Since then Toto had a distaste for life.  He always held hope that one day Janet will come back to him.

Men se pa sa ki te fèt. Janèt pa’t ka viv ak sa l te fè a.  Dezespwa anpare l.  L’al lage tèt li devan yon tap-tap.
But that's not what happened.  Janet couldn't live with what she did.  She was overcome with despair.  She went and threw herself in front of a tap-tap.

Anbilans te vini, men pa’t gen anyen yo te ka fè pou sove l.
The ambulance came, but there was nothing they could do to save her
Janèt al bwachat.  Toto pran nouvèl la.  Se te abse mete sou klou.  Toto pran kabann, li pa janm leve.  Chagren touye l.
Janet died.  Toto heard about it.  It was a bad situation that became worse.  He became ill in bed, and never recovered.  He died of a broken heart.
Mezanmi o! Ala de tèt chaje.
Man! What a dilemma!
Enhen! Pawòl nan bon ti manmit nou ba w la.
Uh huh! We told you the story accurately.

Lecture starts at 6:18

M’ap eseye pale dousman, mwen p’ap pale vit.
Si nou pa konprann, m ta kontan nou leve men nou,
Men nou mande m fè koze a an Kreyòl
Se pou sa m’ap fè l an Kreyòl
Si yo te mande m fè l an Angle m t’ap fè l an angle.

Men, ann komanse:
Se enpòtans lang kreyòl pèp Ayisyen an pou edikasyon lekòl Annayiti.

Men tanzantan gen pwofesè ki bay ti esplikasyon an kreyòl
M’ap kòmanse avèk pwoblèm enpòtans lang kreyòl la
Si mwen pa pale ase klè, fè’m yon siy
Nou pa bezwen pè, entewonp mwen si pawòl mwen pa klè
E si nou pa fin konprann jan m pale a.
M’eseye pale dousman.

Making 'Haitian' Egg Sandwich (Audio)

Click on this link to listen.  Thanks
http://www.audioacrobat.com/play/WFZ8S4pS

Bòs Litreille, sa w’ap fè la a?
Bòs Litreille what are you doing?

M’ap chache zouti pou’m ka fè manje
I’m looking for tools so I can cook.

What kind of food will you cook with these tools?

M ta renmen fè yon sandwich ze.
I’d like to make an egg sandwich.

And what is this hammer for?

Mato a se pou m ka kase ze a.
The hammer is so that I can break the egg.

Oh no bòs Litreille that’s not how you cook.  Pull out you frying pan, let me show you how to make egg sandwich.

Dakò
Ok

Premyèman ou chofe pwelon an, enpi lage yon ti bè ladan l.
First you heat up the pan, then you add (drop) a little butter in it.

Dakò
Ok

Dezyèmman, pran yon bòl.  Kase ze a sou arebò bòl la. Bat ze a  byen bat.
Secondly take a bowl.  Break the egg over the rim of the bowl. Beat the egg really well.

Ak kisa pou m bat ze a menm?
With what should I break the egg exactly?

Ou gen dwa itilize yon batèz oubyen on fouchèt.
You may use an egg beater or a fork.

Kisa pou m fè apre sa?
What should I do after that?

Apre sa ou gen dwa sote yon ti zonyon nan bè a, ansanm ak ti moso tomat, ti konkonm, ti piman, aransò…
You may sauté a little onion in the butter, together with little pieces of tomatoes, some cucumbers, some peppers, herring...

 Aransò tou?
 Herring also?

Men wi!  Se pa ze Ayisyen w’ap fè?
Of course!  Isn't it Haitian eggs you are making?
Of course! Aren't you making Haitian eggs?

Lèfini, lage ze a nan pwelon an.  Li pa’p pran w plis ke 3 minit pou'l pare.
Afterwards, drop the eggs into the frying pan.  It will not take more that 3 minutes to be ready.

Pandanstan sa a m’ap chofe pen m.
In the mean time I’ll heat up my bread.

Se sa.  E men ni!  Sandwich ou pare.
That's right,  And there it is!  Your sandwich is ready.

 Hmmmm Ala bon!
 Hmmmm How good!

Bòs Litreille, ban m fè yon ti goute non!
Bòs Litreille, let me have a taste, wont you?!

Dakò. M’ap pran mwatye, m’ap ba w mwatye
Sure. I’ll take half, I ‘ll give you half.

Mèsi . Hmmmm ala sandwich gou!    Ou gen kafe bòs Litreille?
Thank you.  Hmmm! What tasty sandwich!  Do you have coffee bòs Litreille?

Non m pa genyen men m kapap bouyi enpe.  Kisa m bezwen pou m fè kafe a la? Yon pwelon ak yon chalimo?
No I don’t but I can boil some.  What do I need to make the  coffee?  A frying pan and a blow torch?

O Non, ou pa bezwen tout sa. Ou sèlman bezwen yon kafetyè, enpe dlo, enpe kafe, e petèt yon ti lèt ak  sik.
No you don’t need all that.  You only need a coffee pot, some water, some coffee and maybe some milk and sugar.

Enben vin al fè kafe a.
Well let's go make the coffee.

O O Joujou, sa w genyen figi w fennen konsa?
Joujou what’s wrong your face is so faded?
Joujou why do you look so down?

Mezanmi! Fanfan, yon zanmi m te envite m dine lakay li yè swa – si m te konnen sa’k t'apral pase m pa ta ale.
Fanfan, a friend of mine invited me to dinner at her house last night – If I knew what was going to happen I wouldn’t have gone.

 Ki sa ki te pase?
What happened?

When I got to my friend’s house I thought it just any dinner but no it was a big affair. First off  when I went into my friend’s house I saw that all the guests were dressed very elegantly.  As for me I had an old shirt and jeans on.

O O!

Wi! M vin santi de pye m nan yon grenn soulye.  Lapoula m te dwe fè bak tounen lakay men tout zye te gentan sou mwen.
Yes! I felt trapped.  Right then and there I should have stepped back to return home but all eyes were already on me.

 Sa w fè menm?
What did you do same/even?
So what did you do?

Lè tout moun atable yo – m mete m sou tab tou.  Enpi se lè sa m sonje m pa’t gen  etikèt manje sou tab.
When everyone sat at the table I sat on the table too.  And then that’s when I remembered that I didn’t have proper table manners.

Si m te ou - m ta pran pòz m malad - enpi m ta leve ale.
If I were you I would have pretended to be sick and left.

Non m gen twòp fyète pou sa.
No I have too much pride for that.

So you rather make a fool of yourself in front of everyone?

Mezanmi m sou tab la, m mare kou krab.  Premyèman m pa konn ak ki men pou m ranmase  fouchèt la.  Dezyèman m te tèlman grangou m bwote preske tout manje k te sou tab la mete nan plat mwen
Man! I was at the table, I felt so awkward.  First of all I did not know with which hand to pick up the fork.  Second I was so hungry I brought almost all the food that was on the table onto my plate.

You know that’s not the way is done on the table.  You bring food to your plate little by little.

Ah! manje nan plat mwen fè yon ti pil byen wo tankou yon ti mòn.  Lè m fin manje atò m vin swaf. M rale yon po ji.  M plen vè m nan ra bouch. M kage vè a nan figi m. M bwè tout ji a nan yon sèl goje. Enpe bweson tonbe sou rad mwen  - enpi m vin rann yon gwo gaz!
The food in my plate made a little pile as high as a little hill.  When I was done eating I got thirsty. I grabbed a pitcher of juice.  I filled my glass to the rim.  I brought the glass to my face and drunk the juice in one gulp.  Some fell on my clothes - and then I let out a big belch!

 O O!

Tout moun tonbe gade m atò.
Then everyone started looking at me.

 Sa’w fè lè sa a?
What did you do at that time.

Lè sa a m wont, m jennen - m tonbe pale koze m pa gen biznis pale sou tab la.  Tout moun blije met tèt atè – m te mare kon krab – Lè m te kite kay zanmi m nan, li te lè l te tan.
At that time I was ashamed, I was embarrassed – I started making inappropriate table conversations.  Everyone was looking down (They were avoiding eye contact with me) – I was fumbling.  When I left my friend’s house it was about time.

M’espere ou pran yon leson – pwochèn fwa yo envite w dine, se pou w mande ki kalite dine li ye anvan – konsa w'a pare pou li.
I hope you learn a lesson.  Next time they invite you to dinner you should ask what type of dinner it is first so you can prepare for it.

Pwochèn fwa yo envite m dine m p'ap fè yon pa .
Next time they invite me to dinner I ain’t gonna go nowhere.

Mezanmi! Ou konnen, kè m fè m mal pou madan Paul ak timoun li yo.
You know I feel bad for Mrs Paul and her kids.

Yes, her husband's death is a big shock to everyone.

What was wrong with the husband exactly?

Li te fè yon kriz kadyak.  Li mouri sibitman.
He had a heart attack.  He died suddenly.

Podyab timoun yo, kounye a yo san papa!
Poor kids, now they're without a father.

Life is short.  That's why we should live it to the fullest.

A wi, ou pa janm konnen ki lè jou pa w la va rive.  Sa se vre.
Yes,  you never know when your time will come. That is true.

E kòman fè ou poko al vizite yo toujou?
And how come you have not gone to visit them yet?

Nan sikonstans sa yo, mwen twouve li difisil pou m jwenn sa pou m di yon moun ki nan lapenn konsa.
In these circumstances, I find it hard to find what to say to someone in such sorrow.

E byen, ale wè yo non. Mwen sèten prezans ou sèlman va sifi.  Petèt ou te ka ede madan Paul ak timoun yo tou pandan li okipe ap resevwa moun ki vin swete l kondoleyans. Oubyen ou ta ka pote yon ti goute pou bay etranje ki vin wè li.
Well, go see them.  I'm sure your presence only will be enough.  Perhaps you could help Mrs Paul with the kids also while she's busy receiving guests that are coming to say their condolences.   You could bring snacks for her guests.

Ah wi se yon bon lide.  Mwen va ale wè li toutalè.
Yes that is a good idea.  I will go to see her soon.

M panse li va apresye sa.
I think she'll appreciate it.

Wi sa w di a se sa. Mwen va fè l konnen ke kè m byen atriste pou tande sa ki pase a, e pa genyen yon mo ki sifi pou retire lapenn ni, men m’a kenbe l nan lapriyè.
Yes you are right.  I will let her know that I'm sad to learn about what happened, and that there are no words enough to remove her pain, but I'll keep her in my prayers.

Sometimes you don't know what to say to comfort a person who's grieving, but the angels know.

M kwè jodi a se yon bon jou pou m di w m apresye tout sa ou fè.
I think today is a good day to tell you that I appreciate all that you do.

Wi, nou pa di sa ase.  Nou pa di li souvan.  Li pa bon lò nou tann jouk li twò ta.  Mwen apresye ou tou.
Yes, we don't say it enough.  We don't say it often.  It's not good to wait until it's too late. I appreciate you too.
