Manda, listen to this cryptic sentence:Blan wetè, Mulatre wetè, si lautre wetè, patta va abi!
Woy! Sounds like a racial war declaration.
Can you share more?
I'd like to know the origin of this sentence. mèsi zanmi!
Blan wetè, Mulatre wetè, si lautre wetè, patat va abi! It was sentence prounounced by one haitian soldier named Jean Pimon and he directed it toward Desalin while he was facing firing squad. I think he (Pimon) was accused as some sort of spreader of dissension among cultivators, plainly speaking as potential troublemaker. In literature and in those days when this happened this statement was understood to mean that if everyone turned on ordinary black people of Haiti, the goose of general liberty would be cooked. this episode happened maybe week or two after Moyse rebellion and two months before Leclerc's invasion.
Thanks. This remind me of my school days reading Histoire D'Haiti (The Haitian Social Studies book then). I believe Jean Pimon was also executed, wasn't he? Although considered a hero,Dessalines had some awful lapse in judgement. He was raising a totally racist nation. Have you read Dessalines speech on how he wanted to write the Haitian constitution with the skin of the Blan Franse? This really takes the cake.
yes, maybe i wrote it little unintelligible, it was Pimon's execution....Desalin was ambushed in 1806 on Pont Rouge near Pap...today, it's somewhere inside capital, i think somewhere near today's Santo or Laplen ( I can't remember really where is it, but I think there is big refuge camp there now).. there is also another theory that Desalin was killed in Petion's house on Ri Enterement, but that theory is hardly believable. So far as Desalin behavious is concerned he made many errors, but one unpardonable error was his brutal and harsh treatment of his own fellow citizens, his own Haitians..he was very ferocious toward them, but probably the best explanation of his character can be summed in his saying "koupe tet, boule kay"....but whatever he did, he would be always remembered as first president of first modern and independent state in Latin America, the second on whole western hemisphere, first state in the world established by black people, first and only state till nowdays established as result of successful revolution led by formerly enslaved black people..it was only successful slave revolution in our entire history Every haitian and every citizen of this world should feel some sort of pride because of that accomplishment.
Yes. Dessalines will always be a hero. Although he did not know how to read and write, he taught the slaves to fight for their freedom. That is an initiative that only a warrior can pull off. He had no fear. He incited the slaves to demand for more. And let's not forget that he had the help of a major player: Toussaint Louverture.
From what I remember studying, Dessalines was ambushed by some of his soldiers (probably on his way to Petion's house). He was shot and killed. Then his body was dragged on Plas Lendependans (Which is supposed to be in Gonaives). His body was left there. Later a woman named Defile took his body and burried it. (Please correct me if I'm wrong). Mèsi zanmi!
Tousen Louveti, Manda...kreyol pale, kreyol konpran..:) (just kidding, of course). Yes, you're right, and you are very knowledgeable. You know everything about Haiti....I am flattered to be your virtual friend...Gwo kout chapo pou ou, bel Manda
Dessalines was ambushed by his own troops on Pon Wouj ( that was near military airstrip in Pap, i just remember it) After that they had mutilated his body and dragged faceless cadaver into the city to be stoned. At the end of the day, madwoman(nobody really knows how she became mad, but maybe that was result of rape by hers master when she was eighteen years old.....originally she was born near Okap) named Defile took away body, take good care of it and with help of two soldiers sent by Alexandre Petion she buried Desalin corpse on the cemetery near today's Mon-a-Tif in anba lavil Pap
Blan wetè, Mulatre wetè, si lautre wetè, patat va abi!

Wi, Se sa!
ReplyDeleteYou are totally right.
I now remember reading about this madwoman...
It is such a shame though about the miserable death of Dessalines, and that of T. Louverture.
Nèg vanyan Ayiti pa kanpe pou lontan.
Sanble koripsyon toujou genyen.
Thanks a lot for the clarification zanmi m :)
